II. symphony, D–major,
opus 36.
As we all know, Beethoven opens
the cult of individuality in the history of music. The II. symphony is another
step towards his personal tone. The first two symphonies were composed at the
beginning of his early period, so it is natural that it carries the influence
of his great predecessors /Haydn, Mozart/, and of the era. Apart from this both
symphonies became popular in a short time, and not only in
Movement form: sonata form.
Movement tempo designation:
Introductory
music – Adagio molto, time signature: 3/4
Movement – Allegro con brio, time signature:
4/4
Introductory
music
– Adagio molto
The introductory music /introduction/ is the same as the overture of an opera.
The tone is rather dramatic. It can be divided into three sections.
The so called d-minor motif, which is similar to the
motif at the beginning of the IX. Symphony,
sounds at the end of the third section; it is called the tumbling motif
there.
Its analysis
can be found on the 3. and 4. ppt page!
I. Exposition
The first
and somewhat short theme of the Allegro is played on string
instruments. Its melody is repeated. It is merry and insignificant. ♫
It is interesting, that here
there are two transitions. The first
transition is composed of the first theme, and has forte dynamics. The second
also has forte dynamics, and it features the unisonal passages of the string
instruments.
The second theme sound on aerophones; the first half in piano, the
second half in forte. It is similar to a march; it is immediately repeated with
enriched orchestration. ♫
The first half of
the closing theme sounds on violins, and moves upward;
the second half sounds on whole orchestra in fortissimo, moves
downward, and is immediately repeated. Then the closing theme is concluded. ♫
After this a
short, downward moving arch concludes the.
II. Elaboration / ppt page #8 /
The two sections of the
elaboration consist of motivic arrangements:
Ø first we hear the
minor version of the 1st theme’s opening
measure,
Ø this is followed by
the repetitions of the first theme’s staccato-motifs,
Ø then we hear the
repetitions of the spinning-motif,
Ø then again follows
the staccato-motif, indulating up and down.
The motifs of the second theme are also present:
Ø first we hear the motivic arrangement of the theme’s,
Ø then the d-minor
motif follows, which now moves upward as well,
Ø then a short
alarm-motif appears as well.
III. Reexposition
A reexposition
repeats the exposition almost unchanged, naturally its statement. There’s a
minimal shortening in the transition that follows the first theme, but at the
end of the reexposition, the transition’s arch-melody
sounds three times, before the coda.
IV. Coda
In the summary part, the coda,
just as in the elaboration the motifs dominate. A new motif appears among them,
the coda-motif, after which the conclusion is done by fortissimo chords along
with the staccato-motif.
II. movement
Omne of Beethoven’s most poetic movements. Beautiful
melodies sound in this movement, the likes that summon our life’s joyous and
merry memories, the happy years and desire for freedom.
Movement form: sonata form.
Movement tempo designation: Larghetto, time signature: 3/8
I. Exposition
We hear a beautiful and intimate melody at the beginning of the first theme; first played
by string instruments, then repeated by fwoodwind instruments. Right after follows the consequent part of the first theme, which is also repeated. ♫
After the melody of the transition ends, it is repeated in minor tonality. /Let us
listen how temperate the transition’s musical material is, it completely
adjusts to the theme’s melody, rhythm and dynamics./
After the transition, the fluent flow of the music is
suddenly interrupted by an energetic knocking-motif.
The second theme is repeated in a
melodious and lively (stylized minuet; stylize) variation
form. ♫
Then intimate,
lyrical transitions follow; with
repetitions in piano-forte-piano dynamics; the musical material harmonically
fits the movement’s themes.
There
are two transitional musical materials.
- the
first “small a” sounds in piano, followed by a „bigger a”, which
sounds on the orchestra with more powerful dynamics.
- - the
“big A” sounds
on the orchestra and with forte dynamics, then the “smaller big A” follows
in piano; the musical material is the same.
And
what is also wonderful and amazing: the transition’s
dynamic arch: it starts in piano, the dynamics become more intense and reaches
its climax, then gradually returns into piano. This is signaled above the flow
chart by a low-peaked pyramid. See ppt page #13!
The closing theme first sounds on cellos, then
repeated on violins; its mood is fluent, playful, reminiscent
of the minuet’s flattering melody, which was lifted to the rank of classical
music by Beethoven. ♫
The exposition
ends with a conclusion after the
virtuoso melody of the horns.
II. Elaboration
The motifs that appear in the two short sections of
the elaboration are accompanied by a throbbing sound, and we also hear a countertheme on violins, while sombre,
dark sounds appear in bass. The music reaches a dissonant climax, then the
dynamics gradually soften, and the first theme brightlxy
appears – the beginning of the reexposition.
III. Reexposition
In the reexposition – in
accordance with the rules of the sonata form – the musical material of the
exposition is repeated. However, the orchestration is more beautiful. There is a minimal
difference, namely that there is a small motivic
material after the first transition.
IV. Coda
The coda at the
end of the movement is rather short, and it includes the simple variation of
the first theme, followed by a conclusion in conformity with the movement’s mood.
III. movement
Movement form: scherzo.
Movement tempo designation: Allegro, time
signature: ¾
Beethoven did not
find the dance-like character of the minuet appropriate for the symphony’s
“grand body” /probably because of its aristocratic quality/.
A/ After
the solemn, orchestral forte beginning, comes a less significant musical
material than what one would expect. The small motif consisting of four and 3
notes is played on different instruments every measure.
Flow chart cannot be used!
B/ the
Trio section is also interesting. Its melody is a merry ländler-melody, first played on
aerophones. Its repetitions appear on different
orchestration.
A/ The
scherzo’s “A” section returns.
IV. movement
Movement form: szonáta és rondó
keveréke.
Movement tempo
designation: Allegro molto, time signature: 2/2
This movement is
the symphony’s finale; it is the most daring both in form and idiom; it is “Beethoven-like”, so to speak.
I. Exposition
The fourth
movement, the finale begins with two
surprising and sudden notes; it is
like a flip, or like two quick gunshots; it is the second-motif / » /. This
flash-like motif appears several times throughout the movement; best of all at
the end of the elaboration, where, with its repetitions, it prepares the reexposition, namely the entry of the first theme. It is
present in the exposition, it repeats after the second theme, preparing the
next entry of the first theme.
The melody of the first
theme consists of two parts. The first part is characteristic of rhythm, the
second part is characteristic of melodiousness. The theme is repeated. ♫
The second theme sounds on a clarinet
and bassoon, then it is repeated in minor tonality,
which is even more beautiful. The second theme is the movements warmest, most
melodious lyric part. Listen to the descending violin passages after each
section of the theme! ♫
The second
theme ends in an energetic conclusion,
then the second-motif appears. It is repeated /twenty-one times/, which
prepares the first theme’s impressive introduction. The first theme sounds
again, it is repeated, then the conclusion follows, which marks the end of the
exposition.
This time, the closing
theme is missing; újust like the
repetition of the exposition’s statement of the subject!
II. Elaboration
The elaboration is
short.
Először az első téma
ütemeiből készült részletek kerülnek feldolgozásra, moll hangnemben, ami unisono-menetbe
fejlődik.
A folytatásban szerepet kap az expozíció
elején felcsattanó szekund-motívum. Beethoven ezt a két hangból álló
motívumot drámai erővel ruházza fel. Hogyan?
a reexpozíció.
III. Reexposition
Zenekari szünet után ismétlésre
kerül az expozíció anyaga, mely ezúttal rövidebb.
A reexpozíció a második téma lezárásával
a végéhez ér, mivel a tétel valójában
szonátaforma és rondóforma keveréke. Beethoven átlépi a forma előírásait, de nem rombolja le. A tartalom alá rendeli
a formát.
IV. Kóda
A folyamatábra ezúttal rendkívül részletező, de így jobban érthető!
A kóda muzsikája motívumokból építkezik. Lásd 23 sz. dia!
A jelölések és az
idő-jelek alapján pontosan tudjuk követni a zenei történés eseményeit. A kódában új a tomboló-motívum,
s figyeljünk fel az előtte elhangzó,
s felfele haladó, ritmikájában különös /inkább vergődő/ „vad, barbár” menetre.
A lezárás előtt, Beethoven – szerkesztési módszeréhez híven – felidézi a tételkezdő szekund-motívumot.

Szemébe akarok nézni a sorsnak, egészen lesújtani mégsem fog.
Ó, mily szép ezerszer élni
az életet!
Nyugalmas életre, érzem, arra már
nem vagyok teremtve…”

Ma többen úgy vélekednek
– persze utólag –, hogy fokozatos süketsége nagyban hozzájárult ahhoz, hogy „valóban zeneköltővé”
váljon, az első zeneköltővé a zenetörténetben. (Ennek ellenkezőjét bizonyítja, hogy Beethoven 1804-ben készült
el a III. szimfóniával, mikor
még nem volt süket!)
A Zenei Lexikon szinte
Ami Beethovent ebben a kérdésben a többi nagy zeneszerzőtől megkülönbözteti, elsősorban talán az, hogy
„emelkedett szellemi tartalmat” adott a zenének. Azt a szellemi tartalmat, amit a görög klasszikus
művészet is támasztott a szerzővel, az alkotóval
szemben, s amit a kor művészete, a klasszikus művészet is alapvető célként határozott meg.
